“We visit every breeder we buy from.”

We have all heard these sentences come from the mouths of pet store owners and their employees. They paint this beautiful picture of puppies running by a pond and parents frolicking in the fresh, green grass… Sadly, 99% of the time that is absolutely false. The pet store owners know it, the employees might know it- but the customer is completely in the dark.

This is why we are here.

Bailing Out Benji is a small nonprofit that started in Ames, Iowa and now has volunteer teams all over the country who are dedicated to raising awareness about the puppy mill industry.

Volunteers from Bailing Out Benji devote their free time to researching puppy mills to create puppy mill maps for the worst states, as well as raise awareness about notorious pet stores and breeding operations with huge violations. This includes obtaining CVI data (Certificates of Veterinary Inspections) and making those reports public. NOTE:

-Before an animal is transported out of state, a veterinarian, accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), must examine the animal for signs of “infectious, contagious or communicable disease” and, if no disease is found, sign the certificate for approval to transport.

To make this easier, we will be breaking our research down alphabetically by each pet store and connecting them to the various facilities they use. All of this information has come from the Department of Agriculture and the USDA. All of the breeders listed as associated with the pet stores sold puppies or kittens to them in the years 2021, 2020 and 2019.

*Please note* We do not receive documents about the Colorado breeders these stores source from, since CVIs are not needed unless animals cross state lines.

As of September 2021, Colorado pet stores are required by law to post the breeders they buy from on the store kennels and all online websites or advertisements.

  3. Milton Lewis, Rock Hill Dog Ranch. Newport, Nebraska- 98 adult breeding dogs and 68 puppies. This facility was named one of the worst puppy mills in the nation in 2018 due to their severe violations. 
  4. Julie Johnson, Quenjewel. Murray, Iowa- 29 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: Sharp points poking into kennels, rusty kennels, chewed wood, excessive amount of feces, constantly missing inspections.
  5. AG Beukelman, J Michaels Kennels. Sioux Center, Iowa- 100 adult breeding dogs, with a history of violations including: excessively rusted cages, wires broken and poking into kennels, build up of dirt/grime, excessively chewed bowls, dogs withuntreated eye problems, and dead mice found floating in dogs’ drinking water. Although Beukelman is a veterinarian himself, he is known as one of the worst puppy mills in the country. 
  6. Judy and Steve Thiesse, TZ Kennel. Mitchell, South Dakota- 27 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: Rusted wire and tin poking into dog kennels and run areas. 
  7. Laurel and Barbara Gilbertson, Broken Bow Nebraska- Currently has 3 dogs on the property. This facility cancelled their USDA license, but remains state licensed. This came after the Gilbertsons were named one of the worst puppy mills in the country because of their severe violations and received an official warning from the USDA. 
  8. Norma Jean Harders, Golden Rod Kennels.  Boelus, Nebraska- 27 adult breeding dogs and a history of violations including sick dogs, and using expired medications. Harders was also named one of the worst puppy mills in the nation. Harders also cancelled their USDA license and only remains state licensed. 
  9. Bill and Penny Fattig, B&P Companions. Gothenburg, Nebraska- 101 adult breeding dogs, 61 puppies.
  10. Kenneth Roth. Dorchester, Nebraska- 10 adult breeding dogs, 6 puppies. 
  11. Sara Johnson, Dae Shaw Dogs. Brule, Nebraska- 26 adult breeding dogs, 17 puppies.
