We have all heard these sentences come from the mouths of pet store owners and their employees. They paint this beautiful picture of puppies running by a pond and parents frolicking in the fresh, green grass… Sadly, 99% of the time that is false. The pet store owners know it, the employees might know it- but the customer is completely in the dark.
This is why we are here.
Bailing Out Benji is a small nonprofit that started in Ames, Iowa and now has volunteer teams all over the country who are dedicated to raising awareness about the puppy mill industry.
Volunteers from Bailing Out Benji devote their free time to researching puppy mills to create puppy mill maps for the worst states, as well as raise awareness about notorious pet stores and breeding operations with huge violations. This includes obtaining CVI data (Certificates of Veterinary Inspections) and making those reports public. NOTE:
-Before an animal is transported out of state, a veterinarian, accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), must examine the animal for signs of “infectious, contagious or communicable disease” and, if no disease is found, sign the certificate for approval to transport.

Due to an ordinance in Pierce County, Puppyland must disclose their breeders on their website and follow sourcing regulations. Below is a list of facilities that Puppyland has sourced from since January 1, 2023.

- Andrew Borntrager. Princeton, Missouri- 44 adult breeding dogs and 11 puppies.
- Angela Fields, A + Pups. Green Castle< Missouri- 95 adult breeding dogs and 33 puppies.
- Ann Miller and Pete Miller, Millers Kennel. Milan, Missouri- 130 adult breeding dogs and 81 puppies.
- Betty Fetters. Fetters Furry Friends. Novinger, Missouri- 100 adult breeding dogs and 67 puppies.
- Craig Kleven and Linda Kleven, Fair View Kennels. Walnut Grove, Minnesota- 56 adult breeding dogs and 19 puppies.
- Calvin Good and Teresa Good, CT Kennels. Memphis, Missouri– 119 adult breeding dogs and 46 puppies.
- David Hershberger, BearCreek Kennel. Edgewood, Iowa- 23 adult breeding dogs and 13 puppies.
- David Nisley, Four Paws. Westby, Wisconsin- 161 adult breeding dogs and 82 puppies.
- Dennis Hershberger and Sarah Hershberger. Dundee, Ohio- 25 adult breeding dogs and 9 puppies.
- Devon Yoder. Shipshewana, Indiana- 51 adult breeding dogs and 22 puppies.
- Ella Mae Brubaker, Northwood Kennel. Thorp, Wisconsin- 126 adult breeding dogs and 55 puppies.
- Eva Martin and Isaac Martin, Cedar Line Kennel. Fortuna, Missouri- 22 adult breeding dogs and 25 puppies. This facility was named one of the worst puppy mills in the country in 2016 and 2015.
- Francis Wagler and Margaret Wagler. Loogootee, Indiana- 36 adult breeding dogs and 24 puppies.
- Gary Simmons and Victoria Simmons, G&V Pawprints. Amity, Missouri- 53 adult breeding dogs and 49 puppies.
- Geri Higgins, Higgins Kennel. Kirksville, Missouri- 50 adult breeding dogs and 23 puppies.
- Janet Sloan and Anna Hoover, Tailspin Kennel. Versailles, Missouri- 54 adult breeding dogs and 8 puppies.
- Jim Christian. Currie, Minnesota- 56 adult breeding dogs and 17 puppies.
- John Henry Miller. Utica, Minnesota- 50 adult breeding dogs and 42 puppies. This facility also had violations in 2022 pertaining to selling underage puppies.
- John Otto, Red Barn Kennels. Ligonier, Indiana- 30 adult breeding dogs and 33 puppies.
- Jolyn Noethe, JAKS Puppies, Britt Iowa – 113 puppies . JAKS has also started their own “rescue” in order to lie to the public about not being a puppy mill. You can read that information here. JAKS was investigated and sued by the Iowa Attorney General for charity fraud and was ordered to stop their sham rescue in 2020.

- Larry D Raber. Montgomery, Indiana- 27 adult breeding dogs and 28 puppies.
- Violet Veitschegger, Lazy Daze Kennel. Stockton, Missouri- 42 adult breeding dogs and 18 puppies.
- Levi Kurtz and Martha Kurtz. Jamesport- 14 adult breeding dogs and 10 puppies.
- Lloyd Riehl. Topeka, Indiana- 6 adult breeding dogs.
- Marilyn Zimmerman, Sky High Kennel. Latham, Missouri- 32 adult breeding dogs and 8 puppies.
- Mary Lou Blaine, Sunny B’s Kennel AKA Blaine’s Kennel. Greentop, Missouri- 10 adult breeding dogs.
- Maryann Otto.Topeka, Indiana- 16 adult breeding dogs and 29 puppies.
- Melissa Marie, Mk Acres. Hillsboro, Iowa- 38 adult breeding dogs and 31 puppies.
- Mervin Raber, Pine Hill Pets. Montgomery, Indiana- 14 adult breeding dogs and 10 puppies.
- Orvin Lee Yoder. Bonaparte, Iowa- 30 adult breeding dogs and 13 puppies.

- Timothy Hostetler. Jamesport, Missouri- 9 adult breeding dogs.
- Vernon Miller. Lagrange, Indiana- 23 adult breeding dogs and 13 puppies.

- Gaynetta Snyder and Scott Wheatcraft, Precious Paws. Browning, Missouri- 125 adult breeding dogs and 78 puppies.
- Ida Lewis, Ida’s Toy Box. Graham, Washington- 154 adult breeding dogs and 63 puppies. Lewis received a direct violation in 2019 for having a puppy who’s right rear leg that was missing. The licensee stated that the dam had chewed off that portion of the leg shortly after birth; however, it was not discovered immediately. Because of this and other issues, Lewis was named one of the worst puppy mills in the country.
- Karen Highland, Rocky Ridge Kennels. Milan, Missouri- 58 adult breeding dogs and 29 puppies.
- Sherrye Swenson. Backus, Minnesota- 45 adult breeding dogs and 23 puppies.

- Sharon Munk, BJ’s & Guys. Menlo, Kansas- 641 adult breeding dogs and 279 puppies. Not only are they a very large scale puppy mill, but they have a history of violations including too many dogs in cages, and structurally unsound cages. They were also named one of the worst puppy mills in the entire country .

- Sharon Munk, BJ’s & Guys. Menlo, Kansas- 641 adult breeding dogs and 279 puppies. Not only are they a very large scale puppy mill, but they have a history of violations including too many dogs in cages, and structurally unsound cages. They were also named one of the worst puppy mills in the entire country .
