“We visit every breeder we buy from.”

We have all heard these sentences come from the mouths of pet store owners and their employees. They paint this beautiful picture of puppies running by a pond and parents frolicking in the fresh, green grass… Sadly, 99% of the time that is a bold faced lie. The pet store owners know it, the employees might know it- but the customer is completely in the dark.

This is why we are here.

Bailing Out Benji is a small nonprofit that started in Ames, Iowa and now has volunteer teams all over the country who are dedicated to raising awareness about the puppy mill industry.

So what is the truth? What is the public supposed to believe when the nice store owner and employees paint such a believable and beautiful picture? Again… This is why we are here.

Volunteers from Bailing Out Benji devote their free time to researching puppy mills to create puppy mill maps for the worst states, as well as raise awareness about notorious pet stores and breeding operations with huge violations. This includes obtaining CVI data (Certificates of Veterinary Inspections) and making those reports public.

To make this easier, we will be breaking our article down by each pet store and connecting them to the various puppy mills they use.

  3. Kallie and Josh Bateman, “Bateman Diversified”, Puppy Travelers Transport. Neosho, Missouri- This company transports puppies to Florida under many different names and they were recently named one of the worst puppy mills in the country due to their transport practices. In February 2018, 24 puppies were seized from a Puppy Travelers transport van outside a Petland store in Fort Myers, Florida. The puppies were found with “urine, feces and no water” in their cages, according to news sources, and many of them were sick. This transporter was named one of the worst puppy mills in the nation.   4. Randy Richardson, G&K Kennels. Sumner, Missouri- 29 adult breeding dogs. 
  5. Justin and LaNae Jackson, Jackson Kennels. Clifton Kansas- 424 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: Excessively thin and ill Vizslas, rusty kennels and broken floors.   6. Troy Wedel, Canterbury Tails Pets. McPherson, Kansas- 304 adult breeding dogs, 148 puppies with a history of violations including: dogs with open lacerations, bent and rusted wires poking into kennels, and dogs with cloudy eyes. To view USDA inspection photos, click here. 
  7. Kelli Hynes, Hays Kansas- Dog Broker who buys from relative (on the same property) Izene Hynes who has 160 adult breeding dogs and a history of violations including: dogs with significant hair loss, scabs, eye discharge, and horrible teeth issues.

  10. Rebecca Eiler, Creekside Kennel. Oberlin, Kansas- 258 adult breeding dogs and 11 puppies on the premises. Eiler also runs a puppy mill in Nebraska that was named one of the worst puppy mills in the country.

  17. Judy Maassen, J. Maassen Inc AKA Adorable Puppy. Rock Valley, Iowa – 309 adult breeding dogs and 139 puppies at the time of last inspection, with a history of violations including: admitting to shooting dogs as a routine form of euthanasia, swelling between toes from standing on hard wire cages, rusted wire and excessively chewed enclosures. This breeder has been named one of the worst puppy mills in the country.

David Steffensmeier, West Point Iowa- unable to access records, however he is related to: Mark and Gina Steffensmeier, Salem Iowa- Dogs living in dark, concrete buildings with a history of violations including: spider webs all over, chewed walls/doors of dog houses, tarter buildup on teeth, red gums, dogs with cloudy eyes.   21. Paul and Nancy Nichols, Countree Pet (Meadows), Culbertson, Nebraska- 88 adult breeding dogs. 
  22. Laurel and Barbara Gilbertson, Broken Bow Nebraska- unable to access current dog count. However, the Gilbertson’s were named one of the worst puppy mills in the country because of their severe violations and received an official warning from the USDA.

Philip Chupp, Oak Valley Kennel.  Mcleansboro Illinois- 47 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: rusty enclosures, dirty whelping areas, dogs that are matted, ingrown dog nails, and gaps in the roof which allows rain to get in. To view USDA inspection photos, click here.   3. Merle Schlabach, Sunny Brook Farm. Campbell Hill, Illinois- 20 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations, including dogs with severe dental disease, excessive matting and eye issues; as well as excessively rusted kennels. They were named one of the worst puppy mills in the country in 2015.

  6. Wanda Luark,  Luv & Kare Kennel.  Duncan, Oklahoma- 68 adult breeding dogs. Based on photos from their own website, you can see that the Luark Family runs a puppy mill. 
  7. Lonnie and Shelley Cox, Big Creek Kennel. Maynard, Arkansas– 204 adult breeding dogs
  8. Fred Whitelaw, Marshall Arkansas-  167 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs with matted eyes, dull hair coat and slow movements; shelter building has rusted and worn/sharp edges and surfaces
  9. Gerald Watts, Marshall Arkansas- 30 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs that are so severely emaciated you could see their hips, ribs and spine, dogs with cloudy eyes and dirty food receptacles, cobwebs and dead insects. This breeder was also named one of the horrible hundred puppy mills, twice. 
  10. Linda Brasher, Elite Puppies. Havana, Arkansas- 100 adults breeding dogs with a history of violations including: Excessive feces and discarded building materials in dog housing.
  11. Kathy Parish and Caleb Nichols. Purple Circle Bulldogs and K&J Kennel. Mansfield, Arkansas- 63 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs with dental disease, not examined by vet; veterinary care program incomplete; doors with accumulation of “dirt and grime” and rust; enclosures in disrepair; machinery and “junk” in housing; waste drainage system clogged; broken wire fencing with sharp edges; openings in floors with dogs’ legs falling through; unsanitary living conditions; fly infestation; exercise program incomplete. To view USDA photo of this facility, click here.

  14. Craig Taylor, Taylor Mountain Kennels. Harrison Arkansas- 30 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: 19 enclosures whose expanded metal type doors have excess rusted surfaces which are rough and pitted.
  15. Sandra Balentine, Balentine’s Kennels. Mountainview Arkansas- 135 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs with swelling and lesions on paws, not examined by vet, dogs with eye disease also not examined by vet ; dogs with dental disease, not examined by vet, dogs with excessively long toenails curling into pad,  dogs with matted hair, dogs in kennels that are too small, rusted metal with sharp edges in housing, enclosures in disrepair,  buildup of  grime on doors, fly infestation.

  17. Gary Hewitt, Licks are kisses Kennel. Edgemont, Arkansas- 44 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including; dogs limping, not examined by vet.

  19. Bill Nored, Dryfork Kennel. Edgemont Arkansas- 166 adult breeding dogs. Repeat offender on the horrible hundred list. Pamela Knapp. Prim, Arkansas- 30 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: wire flooring in enclosures with dogs’ legs falling through; accumulation of “grime” on flooring and walls in housing; food and water receptacles not cleaned/sanitized; fly infestation; responsible adult not present to allow inspection.
  21. Benita Boyd, Peel Arkansas- 51 adult breeding dogs with a history of violations including: dogs with green discharge in eyes (untreated by vets), breeding dogs being housed outside without shelter, and dogs with red/swollen paws that hadn’t been seen by a vet.   28. Krystal Tangeman (Kitts Pets) also doing business as Derek/Sandra Rottinghaus (R Family Kennel) , Seneca Kansas- 134 adult breeding dogs. This breeder has been in business for many years and operates under various names. What doesn’t change is the serious violations that they incur and the conditions in which the adult dogs are forced to live in, which include: dogs with severe dental problems, rusted cages, sharp points poking into cages, holes in kennel walls, dogs with no identification, dogs with eye issues, dogs with obvious and painful injuries, dogs with missing ears and injured jaws, many of these dogs not having been seen by a vet. To view USDA photos on this puppy mill, click here.   29. Lorilee Thomas, Puppies Extraordinaire. Whiting, Kansas- 642 adult breeding dogs and 288 puppies with a history of violations including: dogs with hair loss, wires poking into kennels, excessively long toe nails, evidence of mice, etc. To view USDA inspection photos from this kennel, click here. 
  30. Joyce Cairns, Unicorn Kennels. Glasco, Kansas- 116 adult breeding dogs, with a history of violations including: Dogs with excessive hairloss and ongoing medical issues. Breeder is refusing to give proper thyroid medications, dogs with excessive dental issues (tartar buildup), dogs with eye issues and no vet treatment, dogs in contact with heating lightbulbs, Dog noted with such bad teeth it can’t eat, excessively thin and bones/hips protruding. Dogs have severe issues and surgery was recommended by vet but denied, also not given medications, Dogs in so much tooth pain they are drooling, Screws at eye level poking into kennels. This kennel was recently named one of the 2018 worst puppy mills in the country. 
  31. Edgar and Roma Randall  (Roma Patterson) , Oakledge Kennel. Havana Kansas- 29 adult breeding dogs.

  35. Allison Hegdpeth, Lonewolf Kennels and  Dog Mother Rescue Society. Iberia, Missouri- 37 adult breeding dogs. Hedgpeth was also outed as running a sham rescue organization to sell puppies in pet stores that legally cannot buy from commercial breeders. This facility was also named one of the worst puppy mills in the country.
