3.13(b)(3) (Non-Critical) – Veterinary care for dogs.
The facility is not maintaining medical records for vaccinations. At the time of inspection, the facility was unable to provide the APHIS inspector documentation of the distemper and parvovirus vaccine status of 23 adult dogs. The result of this was either the dogs appeared to have never been vaccinated, not up to date, or had no documentation of completion of their puppy series of vaccines. The Program of Vet Care (PVC) prescribes for puppies to receive the parvovirus vaccine at 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age, and for the distemper vaccine at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. Then both vaccines are to be given yearly to adult dogs. Proper medical record documentation is a requirement of the Animal Welfare Act under §3.13(b). Failure to provide this documentation prohibits the APHIS inspector’s ability to verify that the facility is following the Program of Vet Care as prescribed by the Attending Veterinarian and to ensure the animals are receiving adequate veterinary care in a timely and appropriate manner. Dealers must keep copies of medical records for dogs and make the records available for APHIS inspection. The records must include the information in the regulations under §3.13(b), including but not limited to the identity of the animal, the names of all vaccines and treatments administered and the dates of administration. Correct by: May 7, 2025, onward This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the licensee. n
