Two arctic foxes do not have access to an appropriate climatic shelter to prevent discomfort. One of the foxes had a hunched posture and shivered continuously. A video taken during the inspection shows the fox shivering for at least 22 seconds, which is abnormal. The only shelter the fox has access to is a domed plastic shelter that has no bedding and the flooring of the enclosure is composed of river rock. While the roof of the enclosure is a solid surface, the sides are constructed of coated-wire fencing that has no wind breaks. The inspector’s kestrel displayed a temperature of 21.5 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of 19.4 degrees Fahrenheit immediately adjacent to the enclosure. The Weather Channel predicts an overnight low of 2 degrees Fahrenheit with winds at 25-35 miles per hour for December 4-5, 2024. Inadequate shelters do not afford animals protection from wind, rain, snow or other weather extremes. Cold weather exposure can lead to hypothermia and/or unnecessary stress and discomfort. The licensee must ensure that all animals have access to appropriate shelter for the local climatic conditions and that shelters provide adequate protection to prevent discomfort. The licensee added bedding at the time of inspection. Correct by: 0800 hours on December 05, 2024. This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the licensee. n
