2.131(b)(1) (Critical) – Handling of animals.
* At 10:00 PM on March 31, 2023, the licensee placed an adult male Corgi named JJ into a plastic tub used to give baths to the dogs. After JJ was placed in the tub he jumped out of the tub and landed on the floor that was 33 to 34 inches below the top of the tub. The licensee stated that when the dog landed both back legs went directly backwards. The licensee stated that they got JJ to its feet and upon closer examination, found nothing wrong. The dog was able to walk on its own. The dog was returned to its enclosure. At 4:30 AM on April 1, 2023, the licensee went to load JJ into an enclosure to be taken to a dog show. When JJ came out of his enclosure, he was observed dragging both back legs behind him and placing no weight on the back legs. All animals need to be secured in a manner so that no physical harm is done to the dogs. Not having the dog secured in the wash tub could lead to the dog jumping out of the tub causing injury, trauma or physical harm to the dog. The licensee must ensure that all animals will be handled in a manner that does not cause trauma, overheating and excessive cooling, behavioral stress, physical harm or unnecessary discomfort. To be corrected by end of business 10/2/23.
3.13(b) (Non-Critical) – Veterinary care for dogs.
* Documentation of medical records for an adult male Corgi named JJ did not include the names and dates of treatments administrated. The licensee stated that JJ was placed on a pill that was given 2 times a day per the directions of the attending veterinarian. The licensee stated that JJ was given the pill from April 1 thru May 10, 2023. Medical records are necessary to document treatments being given. The licensee must keep copies of medical records on all animals and make the records available for APHIS inspection. Correct by 10/12/23. This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the licensee. n
