3.13(b) (Non-Critical) – Veterinary care for dogs.
Certain medical records were not maintained for dogs sold and held by the licensee. During the inspection, the licensee stated that she performs the following according to the written program of Veterinary Care: 1) monthly preventive care checks to ensure properly trimmed nails, 2) monthly administration of a heartworm preventative 3) docking of tails and removal of dewclaws on puppies at 3-5 days of age. However, at the time of the inspection medical records of these activities were not available. Medical records are essential for APHIS inspectors to evaluate the quality of medical care provided by the facility and ensure the animals are protected from disease, injury, and illness. The licensee must keep copies of medical records for dogs and make the records available for APHIS inspection. These records must include routine husbandry procedures (such as vaccinations, preventive medical procedures, and treatments) performed an all animals. To be corrected by the close of business on 1/17/2024. This inspection and exit interview were conducted with the licensee. n
