Meet Mindi- Founder of Bailing Out Benji
Mindi Callison founded, Bailing Out Benji in 2011 to educate the public about puppy mills and the pet stores that support them. While working as a full-time preschool teacher and raising a housefull of rescued black lab mixes, Mindi and her team work tirelessly to rid the world of puppy mills! Mindi was recently named an “Advocate we Love” by the Humane Society of the United States’ Puppy Mills Campaign and in 2015, Mindi and her dogs were also featured in a documentary! Dog By Dog, a film that explores the money trail behind the puppy mill industry- which is now on Netflix and Amazon. In 2016, Mindi was named an “Advocate we Love” by the Humane Society of the United States and was featured in the January 2017 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine regarding her work in fighting puppy mills , as well as a 2017 article in the Huffington Post.
As the president of Bailing Out Benji, Mindi is responsible for overall event management, program planning, and reporting. Furthermore, she handles public relations, pet store and puppy mill investigations, grant writing, fundraising, and the development of educational materials.
Suzy started volunteering for Bailing Out Benji in early 2016, thanks- in part- to her mother, Kathy, who has been a long time supporter and friend of our organization. The year prior, Suzy had attended a puppy mill auction in Iowa and witnessed the horrors firsthand. She quickly decided that she needed to do more outside of social media and donations. Seeing the sadness and misery the puppy mill dogs live in, Suzy was convinced she needed to do more. Since joining the team, Suzy has helped do the research behind all of the puppy mill maps Bailing Out Benji has released. Suzy has also helped pull dogs from puppy mills, transport animals all over the state, and she has been a crucial asset to all of our educational events.
Brandi remembers her first introduction to puppy mills while she was still a College of Design student at Iowa State several years back. Brandi said she came home from class one day and Mindi immediately began telling her about the horrible puppy mill industry. While she didn’t know it at that point, Bailing out Benji would alter her future down a different path, specifically relating to her career as a designer and solidifying her interest in graphic. On top of volunteering at educational events, Brandi creates all of the graphics, maps and educational materials free of charge to help out the mission. To view her work, click here.
Dan is the master of the interweb. Or, rather, the master of our website! You are literally reading these words because of him! We are so grateful for all that he does- which also includes volunteering at our educational events and transporting our puppy mill rescues all over the state!
Rescuing, volunteering, transporting. Jason does it all… Did we mention that he is the Mailman here at Bailing Out Benji? If you have ever received a package from us- the chances are high that Jason shipped it out!
